Relationship fraud is the largest single category of report we receive, and it is the one people find hardest to see from the inside. That is not a comment on anyone's judgement. It is a description of how the method works: the money is asked for late, by someone the person has been talking to every day for weeks, at a moment designed so that refusing feels like abandoning them.
What follows is the structure we see repeatedly. Not every case has every stage, and plenty of honest relationships contain one or two of these things quite innocently. The pattern is the whole sequence, not any single part of it.
How it is usually built
Contact on a platform with reporting tools
A dating app, Facebook, Instagram, or a comment on something you posted. The first messages are ordinary and unhurried.
A move to private messaging, early
Usually WhatsApp, Telegram or Viber, often within a day or two. The stated reason is convenience and it is perfectly plausible. The effect is that the platform's reporting and blocking tools no longer apply, and no record remains where you met.
Volume, not intensity
Daily contact over weeks. Good morning and good night messages. Real interest in your work, your family, your routine. This stage is the investment, and it is why the method is expensive to run and therefore run at scale against many people at once.
A reason there can be no video call
A broken camera, poor signal, a work rule, shyness. Each reason is individually believable. What is notable is that there is always one, and that it survives for weeks.
The emergency
A relative in hospital, an accident, a customs fee, a frozen account, a fine to release a shipment. It is urgent, it is specific, and it is always something that a transfer today would solve.
Partial repayment
Where it happens, this is the most effective part of the whole method. A portion comes back, sometimes quickly. It proves good faith, it relieves the doubt that had started to form, and it makes the next and larger request far easier to agree to.
What this does not mean
None of these things is proof on its own, and treating them that way would be unfair to a great many honest people. Plenty of real relationships move to WhatsApp on day two. Plenty of people dislike video calls. Plenty of genuine emergencies are urgent and expensive.
The signal is the combination, and above all the order: weeks of warmth, a reason face-to-face contact cannot happen, and then a financial request that has to be answered quickly.
The checks that are worth doing
- Ask for a video call before any money, not after. Not as a test and not as an accusation — just do it early, while it is still an ordinary thing to suggest. A refusal that holds for weeks is the single most informative thing in the whole list.
- Reverse image search the photographs. Google Images and TinEye both take an uploaded picture. Photographs lifted from someone else's account are common, and this takes a minute.
- Check when the account was created and how much of its history predates meeting you. A profile with little activity older than a few months is worth noticing.
- Do not move the money on faith in the channel. Bank transfers, e-wallet transfers and remittance to a named individual are all effectively final once sent.
- Tell one person. Isolation from friends and family is not incidental to this method; it is part of it. A person who discourages you from mentioning them to anyone has told you something important.
If money has already gone
Act quickly, and in this order:
- Contact your bank or e-wallet provider immediately. Recovery is uncommon but it is not impossible, and it depends almost entirely on how fast the receiving account is frozen.
- Preserve everything. Screenshots of the full conversation, the profile, the account details you sent to, and the transaction receipts. Do not delete the thread, however much you want to.
- Report it. The PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group and the NBI Cybercrime Division both take complaints of this kind. Estafa is a criminal offence under the Revised Penal Code, and offences committed online fall under the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.
- Report the account on the platform where you met. This is the part people skip, and it is the one that can stop the same profile being used against somebody else next week.
There is no shame in this happening, and the belief that there is, is what the method relies on to keep people quiet. The great majority of reports we receive come from people who are careful, employed and not remotely naive.
